Resdayn, home to the Dunmer, has long since been uninhabitable due to the eruption of Red Mountain, some time after the Oblivion Crisis. Only recently have the Dunmer migrated back home and begun rebuilding their great cities as well as their culture.
Resdayn is currently controlled by the Five Great Houses of Resdayn. Foremost amongst these Great Houses is House Telvanni, as they are greatly respected for their recently perfected "Ash-Magic", a new magic that fuses Destruction and Alteration magics into a new and unique form of spellcasting which allows them to control and change the ash of their homeland, and create habitable environments from it and more. House Indoril is next in line for influence, as they initially contested Resdayn's working with the Empire. When they refused to yield, their House Leader was assassinated and an Imperial sympathizer was given the crown. Many of House Indoril's nobility committed suicide after these events, and the House all but vanished from the public eye. However, since their secession from the Empire and their urging their dark-skinned kin to join with their elven brethren in the Aldmeri Dominion, their influence has grown. They also seem to have gained the blessings of the Aedra and the Daedra, who have revoked their curse upon the Dunmer, solely for pureblooded Indoril, reverting them to their true nature as Chimer. Members of House Indoril, regardless of their race, are still considered to be Dunmer by law and they are thus still a Dunmer Great House. House Redoran is third in line of influence, as they have provided the bulk of the military both inside and outside Resdayn's borders. This, in addition to their staunch defense during the Oblivion Crisis and their respected leadership during the following years has resulted in a long lasting respect for House Redoran from all Dunmer. House Sedras and House Dren are the least respected of the Great Houses, as they both serve a mercantile service for their Kin. House Sedras farms the flora and fauna of western Vvardenfell and ships them all over the mainland. Meanwhile, House Dren lays claim to their ancestral holdings all over the southern mainland and the southern coast.
House Telvanni controls the vast majority of Vvardenfell, preferring to remain where most of their holdings once were. They have been allowed to claim the majority of it, since the explosion of Red Mountain has made the island virtually uninhabitable without the aid of Telvanni Ash-Magic. Telvanni have gone very far with their Ash-Magic, as well. They can use it for many things, such as the creation of the Arador-Urip (Ash-Blade), Arador-Molfredhin (Ash-Armor), Arador-Telbihn (Ash-Staff) and more. These Aradorian (Ashen) items are nearly as durable as Stalhrim or Daedric items, and are thus prized by warriors of all sorts. Only Dunmer and Chimer are permitted to bear Aradorian items, or the enchantments which hold the ash together break apart, as the spell is a gift from Azura and Mephala unto the Dunmer and Chimer.
House Indoril is second in influence to House Telvanni, as their initial refusal to work with the Empire proved very wise, and since their secession from the Empire and their joining with their elven kin in the Aldmeri Dominion they have served as ambassadors, diplomats, and more. House Indoril employs spies, assassins, thieves, and more to remain apprised of affairs outside of Resdayn. Rumors hint that House Indoril is not employing the roguish Dunmer which so often come in and out of the holdings, but rather the rogues are actually members of House Indoril which have either chosen to disguise themselves with the dark skin which they once claimed, or that they are the House members which do not date their blood back to that of Nerevar himself.
House Redoran is third in terms of influence, as they are serving as both the standing militia in Resdayn, as well as the militia serving actively with the Aldmeri Dominion. Once known for entering battle clad in their renowned Bonemold armor, they have since moved onto House Telvanni's Aradorian garb, armor and weapons made from the ash which coats their home. A common saying among House Redoran to their foes is "Yi ruhn khamir shotelad oam daelkhun." or "My home will find your heart." Home is where the heart is, indeed.
House Sedras has taken a similar position to House Dren, providing mercantile services to most of the mainlaind by means of the Inner Sea. They dabble in magic, and have taken to the usage of Ash-Magic as well as the Telvanni, if not as skillfully. They are newest amongst the Great Houses, and have not done much to really make a name for themselves amongst the Great Houses.
House Dren is a Great House known for its mercantile prowess. They took a monetary hit after the Nerevarine, reincarnation of the Chimer Hero Nerevar, outlawed slavery in Resdayn. Bearing it without complaint they began paying their workers and working their own fields. Now having returned to Resdayn, they have once again laid claim to their ancestral home on the southern mainland and have returned to their farming. Their lands weren't hit very hard by the eruption of Red Mountain, but there is still plenty of ash and soot covering the landscape. House Dren manages to make a fantastic earning out of this hardship, however, as they can produce many of the ancestral products that their kind have long since appreciated, especially the Ash Yam, which bears a religious significance to their people. They ship their products both inside and outside their borders, and are almost single-handedly supporting Resdayn's economy. House Dren is also much favored by the Aldmeri Dominion, as they are known for shipping various armors and weapons from Resdayn to support the enormous elven army that is slowly attempting to dominate Tamriel.
